An augmented reality
prototype for Berlin’s
Ethnological Museum.

We developed an AR prototype for museum4punkt0, exploring possible applications of augmented reality in the Oceania collection of the future Humboldt Forum. When scanning different maps of the region, real-time oceanic current data captured by NASA is rendered on the device and paired with content created by indigenous communities. The app aims to establish a deeper understanding of the close relationship between humans and nature in the Oceania region, which is increasingly endangered by current climatic events.
Through interactive buttons, viewers can take a closer look at videos, photos and texts collected from people in the area to get a better understanding of the relevance of the ocean for their lives.
For the presentation and testing of the prototype, three stand-up displays were constructed, showing a map of the whole Oceania region as well as two detailed views of the Solomon Islands/Bismarck Archipelago and Fiji/Samoa.
